This is the first large-scale monographic exhibition on Domenikos Theotokopoulos, better known as El Greco in Hungary, and settles a long overdue debt owed by the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest for its exceptional collection of spanish painting boasts Europe's largest holdings of works by El Greco outside Spain. These works form the core of the present show. The Cretan-born master, who studied in Italy before moving to the Iberian Peninsula, developed one of the most original and distinctive styles of painting in art history. The fifty autograph masterpieces on show range from small panels from the master's early career, which still bear the hallmarks of Byzantine icon painting, through paintings influenced by the compositional and colouristic practices of Venetian Renaissance art, to larger altarpieces commissioned in Spain, as well as more intimate religious works painted for private prayer, secular portraits, and the visionary paintings that characterised his late period. The overview is supplemented with paintings by sixteenth-century Venetian masters, such as Tintoretto and Veronese, who most directly inspired El Greco.
